The Future Focus for Ngaa Hau e Whaa Marae o Pukekohe outlines the next stage of development across five major priority areas: Whenua & Facilities, Hauora, Kura Maaori, Housing, and Sustainability.

The goal is to ensure the Marae is fully open, operating, culturally strong, and equipped to meet the long-term aspirations of whaanau and future generations. To download a copy of the detailed Future Focus document, click here.

1. Mahi Toi – Restoration of Taonga
  • Urgent repairs and refurbishment
  • Kaiako and materials to teach and pass down knowledge
  • Documentation of waiata, stories, carvings, and whakapapa to preserve knowledge for the next 30 years
2. Governance & Management – Capability and Succession
  • Build leadership capability within whānau
  • Support governance and management training
  • Create learning pathways and strengthen succession planning

Funding is sought to support kaiako, teaching resources, and ongoing development to ensure long-term strength and sustainability.

3. Kura Maaori / Maataraanga Pathways

The marae has a strong desire to develop

  • A Kura Kaupapa Māori
  • Wānanga-based learning
  • Education partnerships
  • Generational knowledge transfer

These efforts support rangatahi development and reinforce cultural identity.

4. Papakaainga & Home
Ownership

The Marae aims to establish papakaainga housing to:

  • Protect the Marae and uphold cultural practices
  • Provide safe, dry, and affordable homes for whānau
  • Build capability and pathways for long-term home ownership

Ongoing hui with Te Puni Kōkiri (TPK), architects, and housing partners demonstrate steady and active progress toward these goals.

Overall Direction

The Future Focus document presents a Marae that is actively rebuilding, strengthening governance, planning new educational and hauora services, developing papakaainga, and creating pathways for cultural, social and economic sustainability

The overarching intention is to secure a thriving future where whaanau are supported, taonga are protected, and the Marae stands strong as a centre of identity, learning, wellbeing and leadership.
